National Geographic Explorers-in-Training

Children and teens are invited to participate in our exclusive National Geographic Explorers-in-Training program, offered in Alaska, Galápagos, Baja California, Iceland and Greenland, and on select voyages to Antarctica. Developed in conjunction with National Geographic Education and led by certified field educators, this interactive curriculum connects young travelers with nature and teaches them to embrace the mindset of a National Geographic Explorer—to discover the world like scientists and tell the stories of their surroundings.

Frequently Asked Questions About Family Voyages

Q: Why are expedition cruises a great choice for families?

Expedition cruises are an exciting mix of exploration and learning, with hands-on discovery both on board and ashore. The ships are casual and comfortable—a welcoming home base where your family can share the thrill of adventure and connect with other families who love to explore.

Q: Which destinations are the best fit for families?

A: Children are welcome on any of our voyages—choosing your destination depends on the best fit for your family’s interests. The National Geographic Explorers-in-Training program for kids and teens is offered on every expedition in Alaska, Baja California and the Galápagos and on select voyages in Antarctica and Iceland.

Q: Who are your guides on an expedition cruise?

A: Each voyage is led by an expedition team that may include naturalists, cultural specialists, undersea specialists and photographers. On select sailings, certified field educators lead the National Geographic Explorers-in-Training program for kids and teens.

Q: What kinds of activities can kids enjoy on an expedition cruise?

Teens and children accompanied by an adult are welcome to take part in the full range of available activities on each voyage, from snorkeling, kayaking and paddleboarding to hiking, biking, photo walks and more.

Q: How do expedition cruises take the stress out of family travel?

A: On an expedition cruise, you unpack once and focus on making memories. We handle the logistics, meals and daily planning so your family can simply choose between adventures like kayaking or biking. With flexible schedules and plenty of onboard comforts, it’s a seamless, worry-free way to explore together.

Q: What family-friendly accommodations are available on board?

Families often reserve adjacent rooms, and several of our ships have adjoining rooms that turn two cabins into a family suite. Select ships also have larger staterooms that can accommodate families.

Q: What can kids do on board your ships?

Many kids love exploring the ship as much as the destinations. They can visit the Bridge to learn about navigation, spot wildlife from the deck, play games in the library, chat with naturalists, enjoy downtime with new friends and much more.

Q: When should families start planning or booking their expedition?

We recommend booking as early as possible to secure your preferred cabins and dates—especially for voyages that coincide with holidays or school breaks, which often sell out quickly.
